Shay Doron, the two-time Academic All-American who was selected by the New York Liberty in the 2007 WNBA Draft, finished her four-year career at the University of Maryland ranked second in career scoring (1,878), trailing only all-time great Vicky Bullett. She owns career records for free throws made (492), free throws attempted (613), and field goals attempted (1,504), and has played in the most games of any player in Maryland history, appearing in 134 games, while starting in a school-record 119 games. Widely credited as being the recruit that changed the course of Maryland basketball, her tenure at Maryland included three years as team captain, three-time All-ACC honors, and being named a preseason candidate for the Wade Trophy, Wooden Award and Naismith Award two years in a row.
Doron also brings international experience to the game, having led the 2005 Under-20 Israeli National Team to the Divison B European Championship, the country's first-ever international women's title, and returning the following week as a member of the US National Team in the Maccabi Games. She was named MVP of both tournaments.
A native of Ramat Hasharon, Israel, Doron's time was split between the US and Israel while growing up. Her parents, both accomplished athletes in their own right - her mother, Tamari, was a member of the Israeli National Volleyball team, and her father, Yuda, was a decathlete - were unrelenting in their support, and in 2002, Doron and her family relocated to the US specifically so she could pursue her dream of playing basketball at New York's powerhouse program, Christ the King high school in Queens. While at CTK, Doron quickly emerged as a player on the national scene, garnering Parade and McDonald's All-American awards.
She currently resides in Ramla, Israel.
